Wife of property tycoon, Scot Young, ordered to leave rented house

A woman at the centre of a £400 million divorce case has been given six weeks to leave her home.

Michelle Young told Central London County Court yesterday that her estranged husband, the property tycoon Scot Young, said that the rent had been paid until December. However, the court heard that no rent was paid and since July 23 this year she owed £24,000 for the property in Regent’s Park Terrace, London.

Felix Geiringer, for her landlord, said that Mrs Young was offered the chance to take over the £8,656 monthly rent but had not paid, despite remaining there. Mrs Young could not remember if she had signed an agreement allowing the landlord to give her 60 days’ notice to leave. District Judge Michael Gilchrist said he could only assume that it had been signed and he agreed a possession order. Mrs Young, who lives in the property with her two teenage daughters, intends to appeal.

Claire Van Overdijk, for Mrs Young, said she had sold all her jewellery to support herself and daughters Scarlet, 17, and Sasha, 15. “She has no assets worth selling any more,” she said.

Mrs Young believed her estranged husband was the real owner of her home but the court heard she was unable to provide evidence of her claim. Mr Young says that he has lost his fortune. The High Court has ordered him to provide more information about his finances at a hearing on November 13 or face jail for contempt of court.

Yesterday’s county court hearing was told Mrs Young hopes the information revealed will back her claim that her estranged husband is a beneficial owner of her home. District Judge Gilchrist said he did not believe the ownership dispute affected the county court’s ability to deal with the case.
